Reflection

The beginning of the book is a fairly typical picture of a rich family. The Birling family celebrates the engagement of Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft. Everything seems to be perfect and Mr. Birling is particularly happy because he is looking forward to a collaboration between his company and the future husband of his daughter. But just as everything was going so well, an inspector burst in.

Mr. Birling was sceptical and very suspicious of the inspector. He himself was on duty a few years ago and did not recognise the new policeman. Birling often threatened him with his position because he had a good relationship with the chief of police. However, this did not seem to worry the inspector much, because he stayed there and started questioning the suspects.

The way Mr. Birling behaved is often seen in people who feel offended. But I would say that most people in this position would react. The inspector, on the other hand, seemed very self-confident but also sometimes slightly annoyed.
