Characterization

Mr. Birling was a very important person in the story. In the beginning and at the end he often appeared in conversations.

The father of the family is a businessman and an ex-cop. He has a very capitalist attitude that can be drawn from his statements. However, he is also open to new things and believes in humanity, as you can read in his speech, in which he also makes an incidental allusion to the First World War, which will take place about seven years later than the story. He is a very proud man and always says that the family is the most important thing. Accordingly, he was quickly provoked when the inspector claimed that his children and his wife also had something to do with the case. However, he did not feel particularly guilty. This was very noticeable when they found out that the inspector was not a real policeman at all and when he inquired whether a suicide had been reported. In summary, Mr. Birling is a proud, often selfish but also quickly irritated person.
